Our origin story starts with four passionate University of Alberta science graduates, all convinced that connecting research to practice was possible.

Matthew Pyper — Principal
In 2007, Matthew recognized a need to bridge the gap between researchers and decision-makers and has been pursuing this passion ever since. After the Sustainable Forest Management Network, he built a knowledge exchange program in the Department of Renewable Resources at the University of Alberta.
Shelagh Pyper — Principal
An educator in spirit her whole life: the demonstration stage at the Telus World of Science, a hands-on math and science curriculum, and the University of Alberta's engineering outreach in northern communities. Founding Fuse broadened that work to nationwide programs.
Sonya Odsen — Lead Ecologist and Science Communicator
From her first research notes and a caribou sketch, Sonya has always looked for new ways to convey the significance of science to diverse audiences.
Kate Broadley — Director of Knowledge Mobilization
From public education at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre and Alberta Parks to helping scientists overcome their communication challenges.
